Working Memory

Working Memory

This test measures your short-term visual and auditory memory, as well as your ability to maintain sustained concentration.

Module Description

You make selections using the arrow keys based on a set of rules that change from round to round. At the same time, you must manage a secondary attention control task.

!

Attention Control Task (Left Bar)

On the left side of the screen, there is a black square that slowly moves downward.

!

Your Task

  • Press the A key to push the square back upward.
  • You can press 'A' at any interval.
  • The goal is to prevent the square from touching the bottom.
Warning:

If the square reaches the bottom, a red flash appears and a beep sound is played. This disrupts your concentration and wastes time.

Symbol Selection Task

The test alternates between two screen types: Computer Screen and Your Screen.

  • On Your Screen: The target symbol is shown in the top-left.
  • On Computer Screen: The target symbol is shown in the top-right.

You must use the arrow keys to select one of the symbols shown on your screen.

3. Selection Rules

Your choice is based on a hierarchy of rules:

  • Select your target symbol — unless another rule blocks it.
  • Do not select the computer’s target symbol.
  • Do not select the symbol spoken by the computer. (What you hear matters).
  • Do not select the forbidden symbol shown at the bottom of your screen.

Scoring & Strategy

  • Correct answer: +1 point
  • Wrong answer: −2 points

This test measures both speed and accuracy. Being too slow reduces the total score, while being too fast increases mistakes. Finding the right balance is essential.

Note: What you hear from your screen is not important. What you hear from the computer screen is critical.
